A borehole is a narrow shaft bored in the ground, either vertically or horizontally. A borehole may be constructed for many different purposes, including the extraction of water, other liquids (such as petroleum) or gases (such as natural gas), as part of a geotechnical investigation, environmental site assessment, mineral exploration, temperature measurement, as a pilot hole for installing piers or underground utilities, for geothermal installations, or for underground storage of unwanted substances, e.g. in carbon capture and storage.

Exploration drilling is an important step before development drilling should take place. Exploration drilling is essential for obtaining actual temperature measurements, rock samples, and retrieving fluid samples for chemical analysis. Geophysical methods can give valuable and useful information about the subsurface, which is very important when determining the best locations for drilling; however, in order to obtain actual temperature and fluid measurements, samples need to be obtained via exploratory drilling.

Percussion drilling is a manual drilling technique in which a heavy cutting or hammering bit attached to a rope or cable is lowered in the open hole or inside a temporary casing.

Reverse Circulation drilling, or RC drilling, is a method of drilling which uses dual wall drill rods that consist of an outer drill rod with an inner tube. These hollow inner tubes allow the drill cuttings to be transported back to the surface in a continuous, steady flow.

Mud rotary drilling is an open hole, fluid based recirculatory method of drilling. The borehole is advanced in rock and/or sediments by rapid rotation of a drill bit mounted at the end of drill rods.

A down-the-hole drill, usually called DTH by most professionals, is basically a mini jackhammer screwed on the bottom of a drill string. The fast hammer action breaks hard rock into small flakes and dust and is blown clear by the air exhaust from the DTH hammer. The DTH hammer is one of the fastest ways to drill hard rock.

Angled holes is a process of drilling holes at an angle to reach the projection point in a drilled hole were water meets vertically and horizontally

The taking of large samples, which may consist of large-diameter drill core, the contents of a trench or mine working, or a car or train load of ore material, for metallurgical testing in mine evaluation.

OPEN PIT GRADE CONTROL generally entails the sampling and assaying of blast hole cuttings
followed by the estimation of Ore control block model grades. The estimated block grades are used
in turn to design surface polygons or dig lines that outline and separate various Ore types and waste
material or the purposes of mining. In an Open Pit operation, this involves the sampling of blast hole
cuttings produced by down-the-hole hammer drills and the classification of bench reserves into
Ore, low grade or waste material, or into various metallurgical types.

AIR CORE DRILLING is a well-known and widely used method when it comes to soft rock and soil
formations. The main feature of this drilling method is that it makes use of three blades that cut into
the earth. The blades are attached to a hollow tube.

The WASSARA Technology uses water to power the hammer. This makes it the ideal
choice for most drilling applications in ground Engineering – for drilling in sensitive
areas as well as for drilling long straight holes. The water-powered DTH Hammer is capable of
penetrating any formation while maintaining speed and straightness.

In problem formations like riverbed and highly fractured formations, it might be
necessary to install the casing as the drilling continues as the formation keeps
collapsing and it prevents the casing to be inserted normally. Once the problem area is
cased-off and the solid rock formation was penetrated, normal percussion drilling
can continue to the required depth. The hole can then be cleaned and developed
for pump testing and pump installation.

Drilling Products

TORQUE AFRICA makes use of a wide range of drilling equipment for maximum and efficient production. Here are introductions on some of our products:

Rotary Overburden

These tools are used in the construction of boreholes in different soil conditions. Rotary drilling is a drilling method where a sharp, rotational drill bit is used in order to make its way through various degrees of surface hardness. Rotary drilling is one of the most effective and prevalent methods used in various industries, including construction and mining.

  • Clay cutters: Drill bits which are specially designed for use in soft surface areas, such as sand, clay or even soft rock.
  • Tricones: This type of bit is capable of handling a wide range of different rock formations including soft, hard and everything in between.
  • Augers: Augers are generally used for drilling holes for deep foundation piles in

DTH Hammers

Down-the-hole drilling is one of the fastest ways to drill through hard rock surfaces. Especially useful in open pit mines and quarries where the ground is hard and tough to drill. Our durable DTH hammers make it possible for smaller drilling rigs to work just as fast as large rigs because of its newer, improved technology.   DTH products can be used in a range of applications:

  • Drill and blast holes in open pit mine
  • Water wells and Boreholes
  • Drilling of holes for piling and footings in construction
